The perfect plant-based protein to add to any and all salads, sandwiches, nourish bowls, etc!
Tempeh used to be my least favorite vegan protein option since it was to bland! I already knew how to make tofu taste good (check out these tofu nuggets), but tempeh was still a mystery to me, until I realized the power of marinating! After many attempts at concocting the perfect tempeh marinade, I have come to the conclusion that this is the best recipe and therefore I must share it with you all!
What’s great about this marinade, is that it is so flavorful that, if you’re in a rush, you can leave it to marinade for as little as ten minutes and it will still pack a punch of smoky and delicious flavor!
This tempeh recipe is…
– full of smoky and complex flavors
– easy to make (and you’ll only have two dishes to wash!)
– and is PACKED with plant-based protein!!

Versatile Smokey Marinated Tempeh (VEGAN)
The perfect plant-based protein to add to any and all salads, sandwiches, nourish bowls, etc!
Prep Time: 5 mins (+10-60 minutes of rest/marinating time) – Cook Time: 7 mins – Yield: 1 serving (8 strips)
Ingredients:
– 2″ piece of tempeh; cut into 8 slices 1/4″ thick
– 3 tbsp soy sauce
– 1/2 tsp liquid smoke (1/4 tsp if you want it less smoky)
– 1/2 tsp garlic powder
– 1/2 tsp onion powder
– 1 tsp paprika
– 1/4 tsp ground black pepper
– 1 tsp vegan worcestershire sauce (optional)
– ~2 tbsp vegetable oil (for frying)
Instructions:
- In a small/medium bowl, add all of the ingredients (besides tempeh and cooking oil) and mix until combined.
- Add the tempeh slices and let them marinade for anywhere between 10 and 60 minutes (the longer you leave them in, the more flavorful they’ll be).
- Once they’re done marinating, add the oil to a pan on medium-high heat and then add the tempeh slices.
- Cook for 3-4 mins on each side, or until they are crispy and browned to your liking.
- Then, remove from the heat and enjoy! I enjoyed mine on a vegan Rueben sandwich (with sauerkraut, mustard and avocado on pumpernickel bread).
